I used the Accuquilt Go 6½ tumbler die to create this. I cut several shapes at once especially for the small print fabrics - which I tend to buy more of now for this purpose, and also they are more economical when fusing cutting.

The Accuquilt Go handled the bulk of up to 5 fabrics no problem.
Each month we got another instalment and paid a £1 for the pattern. The money collected became the prize money for 1st, 2nd and 3rd voted for by fellow quilters - aka quilters choice, at the AGM. Sadly mine did not win, but all the quilts were amazingly different and gorgeous.

I choose very pretty colours - not my usual colour choice at all. I enjoyed working with this range though and it made me realise how much I like white/cream for backgrounds.
I had some Lecien fabrics that would work wonderfully. To make the bag a little waterproof I put in an extra layer of shower curtain between the top fabric and the batting. It makes a bit of a crinkly noise but has worked well.

I am not sure if it is how I have placed the handles or the design of the bag, but the balance isn't quite right, it always wants to topple forward when held by the handles
It's a Multiyork sofa and purchased from a big auction site. I always intended to cover it and was delighted to see that it had fully removable covers, However, I was not brave enough to take this apart and make a pattern.

So when a friend started giving me scraps of fabric from her curtain making business I kept a few. The stash grew and I soon had enough to cover the sofa. I made loose covers, one for the back and one for the seat. I used my overlocker and just sewed pieces together. Once a few were together to make a bigger piece I laid this against the sofa and made a pattern pretty much freehand. It has worked really well, and as you can see Indie like it too!
I will be teaching this quilt at our local fabric shop - Fabritastic, starting in April. I am looking forward to adapting the pattern a little, mostly the appliqué shapes. I am thinking about using birds and flowers?
You can see more of this original quilt here.
Block One

Here are some of the fabrics I will be using. The 2 main focus fabrics are from Moda - Regent Street Lawn. I am starting with 1.5 metres of cream and 1/2 a metre of these 5, I will add a few more colours from my stash.

The first session went well. All 8 ladies were lovely and seemed to enjoy it. The array of colourways is gorgeous and very different, I am looking forward to month 2 already
I have been busy making 'I Spy' quilts. Both use the same block - a quick easy yet effective block.
The first quilt I made was for my Mums volunteer driver's Grandson. As he does so much for my mum and helps keep her independent, I really did not mind making this one;

It measures 48 x 77 inches and is the first to use my own label
I was with my friend M, and pointed the outfit out. Soon after I was at her house with a picture of the dress (left) and we set to making the pattern. We spent a good morning drafting the pattern, and making a sample in calico.

It took me sometime before I eventually got round to making the dress, even though I had the fabric and lining.

This dress is so easy to make. I lined it in a contrasting coloured lining and 'bagged' it to enclose all the seams. This did make doing the hem a little tricky, but I went back to M's house and she helped. She also gave me a really good tip for doing hems. Stand in front a book shelve or something that has a horizontal straight line that you can use it as a guide.
The dress used 2 metres of fabric. My only criticism of it is that I cut the fabric too short making it more of a top than dress. I think it will look ok with leggings or jeans in the summer.

The first ones I made used Cat in the Hat fabric. This is probably around 2005/2006, when the fabric in the UK was very hard to come by, and I stumbled upon a scrap pack at your local fabric warehouse.

I added red and black and then wrote in chalk on the back Cat in the Hat. This was then quilted using thick white thread, and looked very effective.
Once No 1 son's cushion had been totally worn out I made another (any excuse), and I wanted to practice some curved piecing. This was a little trickier than when I pieced the apple core quilt. I used 5 fabrics and stacked them on top of each other, all facing upward. Then I free hand rotary cut wobbly lines. Taking one strip from each fabric I pieced these together and then joined four blocks to make the front centre block. Borders were then added
The top was free motion quilted, but I did add a lizard outline. This was achieved by drawing a lizard onto freezer paper, cutting it out, and gently pressing this into position on the finished back of the front of the cushion. I then carefully sewed around the lizard producing a wonderful effect using YLI Candlelight thread in the bobbin.
Doing something like this is very hard to know what fabrics to choose, here I decided on two Kaffe Fassett fabrics.

Why would I not do it again, purely because I like to know exactly what I have signed up for.

It has been quilted in the itch to emphasise that pattern, and also a star motif has been quilted to replicate the star block
I wanted one that I could store a few key pieces of equipment that I use all the time whilst sitting hand sewing. This one lives by the sofa and is in permanent use! I still love my frog one though!

Since taking this picture I have pinned a small square of wadding to the pin cushion. I use this for needles rather than pushing them into the main cushion and loosing them.
I have used net curtain plastic to keep the top open and it works really well. I have not waded the bag, but think I would next time to give it more shape.Pink Bicycle Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01424467366908573328noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8369470269842371880.post-45650894134648712752014-04-16T22:04:00.003+01:002014-04-18T21:37:11.069+01:00Film On Five -a bucket list quiltThis quilt is on Lucie's blog. I planned my colours on EQ5 and then decided upon the cotton reel block Each block is 6" finished

Using the same fabrics I designed a border to run alongside the colours in the main quilt. The cream is a very fine calico. I am currently quilting the cream and outlining all the reels. as you can see its a work in progress.
This quilt panel is Winterberry Lane by Terri Degenkolb of Whimsical for Red Rooster Fabrics. I fell in love with the art work and loved this panel. I know some call its cheats quilting, but who cares I enjoyed making it. It measures approx 22 by 45"

I have quilted all the panels to emphasise the main pictures. I have applied hotfix crystals to add sparkle, some glitter paint for the snow as well as lovely threads in the quilting. Simple but effective.
I made it for a friend at school who was leaving. We started teaching phonics for the first time in September and shared ideas, tips and resources. She left in March to complete her teacher training. I have used ½ metre a metre of the alphabet fabric.

I cut the alphabet fabric in a strip 13½ by 36" and layered it up with the wadding.

The base was cut out of an old pair of jeans as this is dark and tough. This was layered up with denim, wadding, pelmet vilene, (occasionally I will use another layer of wadding.) It was quilted in a grid to add stability, and I like it!

The base was attached to the quilted bag outer and then the lining was made to the same measurements.

The handles were made from lengths of denim fabric (legs of the jeans) 5 inch wide. This was folded in half and lightly pressed just for positioning. A seam was made by turning the raw edge to the centre crease and pressing firmly. A long strip of wadding was placed down the centre along with a length of heavy duty cloth tape. This next bit can be tricky and you really need 3 hands. Fold the raw edge to the middle and bring the seam edge on top to enclose the wadding and tape. Press very firmly, and pin. Take this to the sewing machine and sew to secure all layers

Lastly insert the lining - with pockets if you like, turn through an open bottom seam and press the top edge, top stitch and close the open seam. Ta daah

And so my list grows. However, I have no record of them, so here it is. I will give credit to quilt makers/designers/artist where I can.
The first uses a selection of baby fabrics. I have included some basic instructions.

Finished quilt is 40’’ by 50’’

Finished block size 5 ½ by 5 ½ (total number of blocks = 80)

From the novelty fabrics cut 80 rectangles 5 ½ by 3 ½ ‘ ensuring that you ‘fussy’ cut them so that you get a complete image from the fabric in each block (i.e. don’t cut the head off a tiger!). Cut 40 rectangles portrait and 40 landscape.

On each long edge sew a 1 ½ by 5 ½ strip using a ¼ ‘seam allowance.. Press all seams towards the sashing, ie away from the middle.

Once sewn, press all blocks trim to 5 ½ ‘ squares. Assemble the blocks so that the landscape and portrait blocks alternate. Lay each block out and think about adjoining blocks for colour and pattern. Sew the blocks together in rows, and press all block joining seams to one side, alternating to the left or right for each row. Join the rows together by matching the seams. Once each row is sewn in place, press firmly.
The selection I have is a range in red, white and black, with a tonal white as the contrast

I chose a design that would show off all the fabrics and I wanted a strong geometric design.
Here are some of the blocks on the design wall, I added another row to this.

From all the fabrics I cut strips the width of the fabric 2 ½ " wide. I then sewed each coloured strip to a strip of the white tonal fabric and pressed the seam to the dark fabric. I lay another unit on top, matching the sewn seam but alternating the coloured fabric and white, so coloured was on top of white and white on top of coloured. I then sewed along each seam making a tube. Using the Creative Grids 90* strip ruler I cut the strips into triangles. Once opened up these made stripy squares.

This method is quick and easy. I have quilted in the ditch to emphasise the geometric pattern.

I like the idea of using other peoples or my own unused items. With a little bit of sprucing up it's great to give something a new use and a new home.

We used to use this little box of drawers for bits and pieces but haven't used it for over seven years. It has sat unused in the loft. So I thought I would have ago at decopatch.

Firstly I sanded the box lightly, then gave it a coat of matt emulsion paint.
Once dry I applied small pieces of colourful tissue paper using PVA glue. Its very easy and quite therapeutic to do. Once totally dry I gave the whole thing a good coat of PVA glue and left this to dry. I intended to use the drawers to store my jewellery so lined each one with colourful felt. I am very pleased with the finished product.

The trouble with using a blog to catalogue all my work is the randomness of the postings. I suppose I should have been more methodical at the planning stage!

Anyway here is another favourite Christmas quilt, my Cheery reindeers! Its approximately 60' x 60' and all in plaids. It has a brushed cotton backing and is a wonderful cuddly quilt. The reindeers have been bondawebbed in place and then blanket stitched around the raw edges by machine. The thread used was YLI Soft Touch.

The trick was working out the widths of each frame to make sure each place mat was the same size. Quilted very simply in the ditch with a gold metallic thread. All used and enjoyed every year.
I trawled the internet to find a classic 60's dress pattern. I wanted something retro, but classic, suitable for work, but also one that I could cycle in!

The pattern I choose:

With the help of my friend M we made the pattern to fit me. Careful measurements were taken and then the paper pieces of the pattern were draped over me. It soon became apparent that we needed to use different size pieces for my front and my back. Once we were confident with the right pieces a sample dress was made in calico. This allowed for a more accurate fitting. Once a reasonable fit was achieved the sample was taken apart and used to make a paper pattern.

I was then on my own to sew the pieces together. This has been a huge and lengthy learning curve for me and I have loved it. I have made big mistakes but have learnt so much by doing so. The pattern still needs adapting as I am not happy with the positioning of the bodice darts. For my first attempt in a very long time I am quite pleased.
I have used the zip as a feature and I would have liked the lining to have been the same colour as the zip. However, I had already bought the lining and could not get a zip this khaki green therefore I choose red. I have attached a new zip pull just to add more detail.

I have hand slip stitched the lining to the armholes and neckline, just to make sure the lining is not visible on the outside.
At our quilt group we have all nagged each other to make name labels. Being the main organiser pretty much everyone knows my name, however that was no excuse not to make one.

Here is my first attempt at free machine embroidery qriting. I used the computer to type my name in a font I like, printed this and traced it onto freezer paper, then ironed onto a piece of fine calico. I used Ricky Tims Stable Stuff underneath and carefully sewed along the line. I went over it twice. This was attached to a piece of crazy patchwork 2 ½ square. Basically this was tiny scrapes of fabric bondawebbed onto a piece of Stable Stuff and very thin wadding and free motion quilted. The name is fixed in place with tiny circular stitches and embellished with beads.

Another piece of Stable Stuff and the backing were all stitched in place with a satin stitch binding.

The back has a magnet (eBay) rather than a pin.Pink Bicycle Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01424467366908573328noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8369470269842371880.post-62075709579181112232013-03-17T20:22:00.002+00:002013-03-17T20:22:40.316+00:00In the PinkHaving two boys I always jump at the chance at making a baby girl quilt. This one was made in December 2012 for my neighbours daughter. It is a twist on the 'I spy' theme with lots of pink.

By alternating the direction of the blocks the effective pattern is created. I choose to make the borders from my stash of pink fabrics, this worked really well and I am pleased with the end result.
